On average, expect to say your puppy's name over 1,000 times before they truly learn it and respond consistently, so the time it takes to teach your puppy varies slightly depending on how many times you can say it in one day!

Establishing a strong name recognition should be one of your top training priorities in those early days, and the key really is repetition - work the puppy's name into just about every interaction and activity you have with it. Call out its name during play sessions, while giving treats, before meals, during walks, and any other time you can. The more you say it, the faster it will stick.

How Do You Get a Dog to Learn Its Name?

Step 1 - Find a quiet environment

Then, say your puppies name, and immediately give them the treat. Each time they take the treat, respond with excitement and positivity, to ensure you are positively reinforcing the action. Repeat this step at least 10 times, to ensure your puppy understands the basics.

Next, let your puppy get a bit distracted by allowing them to avert their attention elsewhere in the room. Once they're no longer focused on you, call out their name just like before. If they turn back toward you and make eye contact, immediately reward with a treat while enthusiastically praising!

If during the previous step your puppy did not respond after a couple of seconds, move your hand forward, placing the treat under their nose and lure them toward you. Then praise them for following the lure toward you.

One great way to speed up this process is by swapping out the food bowl for manual feeding. Say your puppy’s name and when they look at you, reward them. Repeat this with each piece of kibble, at multiple meal times if you wish, but ensure that your puppy has water nearby as it will become mentally tiring for them.
